Genie Life Sciences
I joined Genie Life Sciences in its very early stages as a lab automation startup in 2020, and have had a very challenging and rewarding experience as the UX Lead and Frontend Developer. From the early stages of researching labs and discovering many pain points at all levels of the protocol design and implementation process, I spearheaded innovative software solutions that would shake up the liquid handling industry.
The following views showcase a mixture of assets I was a key participant in, primarily the cloud-based application that allows scientists, automation engineers, and lab operators, to get their work done more efficiently, more accurately, and more enjoyably than any other lab automation software on the market.
The following videos provide an overview of the overall product offering at Genie Life Science. The first video describes LabOS, and how it can be used to help design, manage, and execute your entire lab automation workflow.
The second video shows a more detailed view of the protocol authoring experience, showing how a scientist or automation engineer can quickly author a simple liquid transfer from one plate to another.
The protocol authoring tool is the core of Genie's lab automation software. The interface offers a simple drag-and-drop workflow allowing non-automation savvy users to get their work done quickly and intuitively. The following image captures show how a simple transfer can be created, simulated, and run against live instruments in the virtual lab.
In todays wet labs, automation engineers are constantly perfecting and optimizing protocols that require exacting labware specifications. Genie recognized that we wouldn't be able to provide a catalog of every possible labware, so we created a tool that would allow custom labware to be created and used in the system.
The following views show what our automated arm configuration screen looks like. We used a simple diagram that gives a high level view of which instruments are connected to the arm, and which connections haven't been configured or have issues needing to be addressed by the automation engineer.
Genie was built from the bottom up using building blocks from this simple UI kit I established from the very early stages of design. This kit was intended to be as simple as possible and convey meaningful information to user, for example we only used our blue for actionable content like buttons and switches. Having a strong UI kit helps design teams move faster and create designs that are more consistent.
The annual SLAS event was an extremely important component of our sales and marketing presence. Being able to demonstrate highly sophisticated lab automation setups gave us a ton of visibility to our new brand, and opened up many conversations that directly led to sales and partnership agreements.
